Christmas message from RSM

2022 has seen RSM take the opportunity to return to something approaching normality following the disruption of Covid, but it has also been a year of growth at RSM.
We have seen a 36% increase in the number of music professionals offered financial assistance this year and an increase of 31% in grant spending – our highest ever giving. We have reached out to musicians from all corners of the UK, representing 20 different nationalities, aged between 19 and 97, although 42% of those offered assistance this year have been aged 40 or under, a trend that has been growing since the pandemic.
We have also grown as a community. Hopefully, many of you will have noticed our increased communications activity and refreshed look and feel. This has resulted in membership recruitment once again returning to pre-pandemic levels, with more and more people choosing to join our community of like-minded music professionals every month. After all, it is thanks to all of you, our Members, and your unwavering commitment that we have been able help so many. Thank you.
But there are challenges ahead, the continued cost of living crisis means everyone will be squeezed in 2023. Having an accident or falling ill and not being able to work is always a difficult time for anyone, especially freelance musicians who do not have the safety nets many of us enjoy. But as inflation remain at a record high, these troubles will undoubtedly cause extra stress and anxiety when trying to make ends meet. We expect the number of music professionals coming to us to reflect this in 2023. But we stand ready, as ever, to help by providing financial support, advice and guidance.
We are steadfast in our commitment to the music profession, just as we have been since our founding in 1738. So, if you know of anyone who made need our help, or equally, would like to join as a Member, please do get in touch here to let us know.
There is also much to look forward to, with the return of Healthy Practice webinar series, the first of which will take place in February and focus on vocal health. For the first time, it will also feature peer support groups, to take a deep dive into what singers need most when it comes to looking after their voice. We are also excited to return to quarterly in-person Members’ meetings in March. Take a look at www.rsmgb.org/events to see what’s coming up.
A very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from everyone at RSM, we look forward to seeing you in 2023.
