From the Archives: In Memoriam

Roll of Honour of Members of the Royal Society of Musicians of Great Britain who gave their lives and served in His Majesty’s Forces during the Great War 1914-1919.

In commemoration of those who lost their lives, and of those who were involved in either battle or defence, during the First World War.

In their minutes of 15 February 1920 the “House Committee” was instructed to obtain an estimate for making a Roll of Honour, and for replacing an early list of donations.  On 21 April the Committee recorded:

“Donation Boards.  The estimate of Mr. Elliott & Brooks of £68.10/ for repainting and lettering the Donations Board and Roll of Honour was considered.  It was Resolved That Mr. Elliott & Brooks be instructed to carry out the work omitting the names of the regiments from the Roll of Honour”.

The Roll of Honour survives in the Society’s records through a photograph of the painted list.  It was originally housed in an ornate decorative frame, displayed in the entrance hall of the Society’s premises at 12 Lisle Street, Leicester Square.
