RSM is proud to host the 'Transformational Teaching' online discussion forum with Professor Derek Aviss OBE, Emeritus Professor of Education at Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music & Dance, taking place at 12.30pm on Wednesday 11 February 2026. It promises to be a fascinating look at the key role played by teachers in mastering student technique.
Derek writes:
"In recent years there has been a significant amount of material published about studying and performing, encompassing some of the physical and mental challenges which can be encountered. There are a multitude of different systems and methods being delivered, many of which have their supporters and practitioners and conversely their detractors. But, wouldn’t it be nice if professionals, at the coal face, were able to share with each other their experience of ‘transformational teaching’. Chaired and overseen by myself, I will be inviting participants to share their experiences of highly successful teaching situations. Non presenters will be able to participate and ask questions, after which it is hoped that a resource can be developed from this and subsequent sessions in which multiple examples of good teaching practice can be made available across the whole sector. Being a teacher can sometimes be a somewhat isolated and lonely profession. However here is an opportunity to engage with colleagues, belonging to a multitude of representative bodies and to share together the value we bring to people’s lives, by stimulating their interest in and ability to make music."
