Hearing health is essential for musicians, and protecting our ears is key to maintaining both performance and long-term wellbeing.
Hearing issues are one of the main health concerns for musicians. This workshop will begin with an introduction to the ear and hearing, examples of how the ear may be injured by occupational and recreational noise, along with practical tips for keeping ears healthy and advice about seeking help if you experience signs of a hearing disorder.
Dame Evelyn Glennie is a world leading solo percussionist, composer and educator. Evelyn is a double GRAMMY winner, BAFTA nominee, recipient of the Polar Music Prize, the Léonie Sonning Music Prize and the Companion of Honour and will share her unique experience and perspectives on listening and sound.
Dr Finola Ryan is an occupational physician who specialises in performing arts medicine, combining her medical expertise with a background in music performance, having trained in music at University College Cork before qualifying as a doctor. As Executive Medical Director at BAPAM (the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine), Finola oversees healthcare provision for over 3,000 performing artists annually, delivering free health assessments, education, training, resources and support across the sector.
